We discussed in group how fun it would be to see peoples’ families.

I’m posting a picture from my day camp when I was in 2nd grade. When I saw this picture a year ago I was shocked at how many kids have autism. It’s like I was at a special needs camp.

To be clear, there wasn’t really day camp at that time; you either did overnight camp or you stayed home all summer with your mom. So it might be that these kids are all the outliers who had moms working (I only remember one other mom who worked besides mine.)

A few days ago I caught my 17 month old standing like this – what I think of as “my” usual standing position, The Stork. Now I know it’s a sign of bad balance and autism – so early already!

Penelope also told me that both her son and his father hold their utensils like this – not using all the fingers.

Any other physical signs I’m missing?

I just noticed something else. I did a lot of research about eating problems with autistic kids. They are usually really fast or really slow and then the parents get stressed at mealtime and start doing weird things with eating to relieve the stress. One thing would be to let the kid eat everywhere instead of just at the table. Eating has a lot of sensory input, so kids (and adults!) compensate for that by standing instead of sitting when we eat. Not everyone, but it’s an autistic thing when it happens.

It’s important to make kids eat in normal ways because then you can see the irregular tendencies and address them. Being very permissive — for anything, eating, sleeping, running around when they shouldn’t be — is actually just masking a bigger problem that the parent isn’t read to confront.

This makes me wonder if a good way for us to get help as parents is to just send pictures/ videos to someone who knows what to look for. Then we don’t have to leave our house or talk to anyone – makes it easier.
