Podcast with Glennon Doyle and Katherine May
Posted by Pam on June 21, 2023 at 9:51 amI wanted to share this podcast with you all, I mentioned it in our group this morning. Katherine May talks about autism so well. I’ve thought Glennon is autistic, and turns out Katherine thinks that too:)

Not to spoil it for the non listeners, but I really like the line ” I don’t like someone else knowing more about me than I do.” when people tell other people “you are autistic”..
I think especially with autism, the sense of realities and size of problems are convoluted our whole lives until you go past survival mode into understanding mode. And having no good experience with a proper feedback loop in our growing up journey, it’s like a key thing i go back to over and over again after our group meetings. What part of the discussion worked for me and what didn’t. Especially the part that didn’t work is usually a sign of an experience that I cant’ see the part of my sensitivities clearly yet, and the ways it’s being replayed currently.
The podcast interviewee is the opposite penelope trunk autistic women approach. Haha

That part stuck out at me too @ruonanl
I don’t think that’s just an autism thing, I think that’s a human thing.
-
really? i’ve tried this on other people and people who are more neurotypical respond more immediately to my comments with a genuine response “oh i didn’t know that. But now that you’ve said it, it makes a lot of sense!” vs people who are very resistant “well, i dont think it applies to me, you do you and i do me. ” followed with “can we talk about something else now.”
And that makes me think the very resistant people are hiding something. why don’t they like admitting or talk about it. other than it sounds like gossiping/privacy

I’ve been thinking about this and this is what I think – those people that appear to take in what you tell them, they go home and don’t do anything about it. And I think that as human beings we have to learn things for ourselves and it has to be the right time and we have to be open to it to be able to receive it.
The other thing I’ve been thinking about is, as I’ve gotten older I realize I don’t listen to anybody unless I completely trust them.

lol, that was my deleted question. I like you added to clarify
I think in the podcast, I guess Katherine made her autism sound really put together so it annoyed me a tad bit. even when she’s talking about being highly sensitive sound very controlled. Whereas mine is usually a silent implosion.
-
Yes – I’m with you on the silent, internal implosion. I read Katherine May’s Electricity of Every Living Thing and she goes into more detail about how it shows up in her life and she’s pretty honest but my sense is that she had supportive parents because there is no mention of her upbringing…maybe that’s me just reading into things -but if that’s the case, I personally think that makes a big difference.

I listened to this! So very good and yes Glennon is very clearly autistic and so is her partner.
I don’t care to tell people they’re autistic. If someone approaches me to discuss their self discovery, I happily engage, but it’s not necessary otherwise to inform people and the downside outweighs the upside of informing others.I’m very happy since retiring from that practice lol

I recently finished listening to her book Love Warrior and she struck me as extremely autistic. I don’t think I would have picked up on it a year ago. And it was interesting how much she generalized her experience – writing “universal truths” that are only universal for autistic women. It was eye-opening
