  • How do you distinguish between HSP and Autism?

Posted by marcia on February 9, 2023 at 4:30 pm

For those of you who have thought about HSP a bunch, would you share with us here your insights and stories? Several people in my life identify with HSP, yet seem to be missing empathy, or the capacity to self-regulate, or any ability to go with the flow and I’m recalling seeing here somewhere an equation like HSP+Trauma=Autism that I’m not finding again yet feels very right.

One report I read said 1 in 5 are highly sensitive (HSP) and only 1 in 50 is autistic so I’m having a hard time knowing where to turn to learn more. Even just hearing others’ experiences with this would be great!

I think HSP are fucking whiners who need an autism diagnosis so they will shut up. The only times I have ever heard people talk about their HSP-ness is when they needed a better desk or better hours at work. Also, I have never liked anyone who ever told me they are HSP. And I really really like autistic people. So it’s surprising that I wouldn’t like HSP.

Okay. Just being toxic. To add some spice. What is the opposite of HSP. Maybe that’s what I am. Oh. Wait. Asshole? Okay. I don’t know why I hate the HSP label so much. Wait. I know why. Because the person is invariably telling an autistic person that they are HSP and really, what in the hell is an autistic person going to do? They’re already doing the best they can.

I hope it makes you feel better to know that I also hate the label of HSP and think it’s laughable when people tell me they are. Because they all seem to sort of parade it around as a special-snowflake sort of thing. Adjacent to people claiming that they in fact have nigh-psychic empath powers.

I feel like saying you’re an HSP tends to be Feeler-type people’s way of saying that they are special and sensitive flowers.

I’m probably ALSO just an asshole though.

This just popped up on my TT. I listened to Elaine Aron on a podcast a few months back because this subject fascinates me. She sure sounded autistic to me.
